Information about Khao Lak, Thailand
The Khao-Lak National Park is situated only 90 minutes by car
from Phuket in northern direction. Khao-Lak in Thailand is one of Thailand's
last unspoilt and protected resources of nature. The way to Khao-Lak from Phuket
along the well-maintained highway #4 is like a sightseeing tour itself, as it
guides the visitor along wide green rice fields and coconut plantations. Shortly
before reaching Khao-Lak, the surroundings suddenly change and the serpentine
road winds through a magnificent jungle where huge hundreds of years old trees
domain, surrounded by a dense green forest. Here the visitor will find untouched
tropical vegetation where exotic plants and animals live unharmed like thousands
of years ago.
Shortly before reaching Khao-Lak center, the viewpoint
offers a stunning panorama over Khao-Lak's 12 kilometer long coast line. The
picturesque golden sand beach stretches along the Emerald-colored coast of the
Andaman Sea, bordered by palm and coniferous trees. The hinterland is dominated
by palm and rubber plantations to soon be replaced by the green mountains of
Khao Lak's Lamru national park.
A vacation in Khao-Lak stands for
nature, recreation and relaxation. The ones who dare for a pulsating nightlife
will be better of visiting Phuket. Khao-Lak offers the chance to get in touch
with the local people and the land itself.
The center of Khao-Lak
features beside hotels and resorts some shops, restaurants and mini marts as
well as a few pubs. Here the visitor may throw a few darts, play a round of pool
or even shake a leg at two of these cozy nightlife venues if the music and the
mood allows. There are two major golf courses nearby: The Tab Lamu Golf course,
about 6km south of Khao Lak and the Thai Muang Golf Course, roughly 25km south of
Khao Lak.
The next bigger
village is Takua Pa, which is located 28 kms up north from Khao-Lak. The village
accommodates a few interesting buddhist temples and older colonial style
buildings plus one hospital and several banks who accept international currency
and credit cards. Khao-Lak itself has several banks, money change counters and
ATMs.
Khao Lak is also very popular amongst scuba divers, due to Khao Lak's close
proximity to the famous Similan Islands, regarded to as one of the world's top
ten scuba diving destinations. Due to gigantic colorful reefs in the shallow
lagoons, the Similans are also an exciting and safe haven for snorkellers.
Many Khao Lak based dive centers offer scuba courses from beginner to
Pro and daily boat trips to Similan, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock
as well as wreck diving. We recommend Manta Point located in Khao Lak center.

Many westerners already call Khao Lak their home and have built or purchased am
house or villa in this area. Not only is a house in Khao Lak, Thailand a much more
appealing home than a small flat back in Europe, but a profitable investment, as land prices in Khao Lak
went up by 400% in the past three years, despite the December 26 tragedy.
